A Decade of Startup Fashion Week Triumphs

While Toronto City’s skyline has been steadily transforming, one change that has remained beautifully consistent over the past decade is the vibrant pulse of Startup Fashion Week™ (SFW)—SFW’s passionate drive to spotlight those young designers fueled with creativity but remained overshadowed by the big, high-profile brands.
Ten glorious years! That’s how long SFW has been weaving dreams, knocking down industry walls, and giving the underdogs a gleaming platform to shine. Founded in 2014 by Jodi Goodfellow, the event was birthed from a clear vision: to bridge the yawning chasm between newcomers and the intimidating world of fashion. Jodi saw the disconnect – the glitz and glamour reserved for the bigwigs, while countless vibrant startups faded into obscurity due to a lack of support.
Do you know that feeling when you see brilliance wilting away because they don’t have the right stage or microphone? That is the feeling Jodi had, and she couldn’t bear it.

“I realized we needed a change when I saw how many inspiring entrepreneurs in Toronto were not receiving attention or funding in the fashion and fashion-tech sectors, ultimately seeing so many great businesses fail. Top-tier fashion events offer marketing, press and industry connections, but the price to participate is too expensive for new businesses. I thought: how are small businesses supposed to get from A to Z without support or affordable opportunities? It became obvious I needed to create a fashion week platform specifically supporting startups with a forward-thinking approach in programming,”

Gone are the days when fashion stardom was limited to the charm of internet virality or fleeting fifteen minutes of fame. SFW opened up a world where designers weren’t just showcasing their work but building their own brand narratives. They’ve been granted opportunities to network, share their stories, glean insights from the best in the business, and walk away with applause and real, tangible business connections.

This October marks a poignant chapter in SFW’s journey. A decennial celebration of not just fashion but of dreams, drive, and unyielding determination. The air is excited as Mister Wolf prepares to host the Media Launch and Opening Party on the 24th, offering a canvas for reflections, accolades, and some high-octane fashion glamour. Then, there’s the private photo shoot at the opulent Parker by Fitzrovia, providing a regal backdrop for designers to craft their visual narratives. But it’s not all just sequins and spotlights. The Business of Fashion Conference, set for October 26th, promises to be a melting pot of insights, with the creme de la creme of the fashion industry, including the remarkable Myles Sexton, sharing their wisdom. And, of course, the pièce de résistance: the Runway Show at Daniels Spectrum on October 27th. If you want to glimpse Canada’s future fashion leaders, this is the place to be. Hosted by the effervescent Tania Tonello, this event promises to be an exhilarating blend of passion, creativity, and undeniable talent.
